Sample Itinerary
5 days of play and shopping in the Skylands Region of New Jersey
Day 1 Ride and Ride
- Start off with a ride on our complimentary bikes. Load the bikes into your car or ride the two miles to the Sussex Branch Trail Head. This trail will take you on a wonderful landscape through fields, wooded areas, rocky outcroppings and past a lake. The first break in this trail is at Cranberry Lake, just two miles into your ride.
- Continue on the Sussex Branch Trail with a short detour onto Route 206 before returning to the trail.
- OR- return to the Inn to grab a snack and drive to one of two outfitters for a horseback ride. This one is easy, the horses do all the work. After your ride return to the inn for a complimentary soft drink and snack before preparing for dinner at Bell’s Mansion
Day 2 A Step into the Past
- Head North on Route 206 to explore the many options for antiques at the very unique Scranberry Coop. Each booth is individually owned so each selection is different.
- Continue traveling on Route 206 North to travel into the past to visit the 8+ of antique stores on Main St (Route 206) in Andover Borough.
- Once again continue on Route 206 N to Newton. Take a walk down the Main Street of this busy town. Depending upon the time you will want to sample the offerings at one of the café’s on Spring Street.
- If you are ready for more antiquing return to Route 206 N until the light at Route 94 N. At the Lafayette Mill you will once again see several antique vendors under one roof.
- At the corner turn right onto Route 15 South. Complete your day with a stop at the Ole Lafayette Village Antique store. Then, settle down with appetizers and a beverage of your choice at the Lafayette House. Perhaps you will want to remain for dinner before returning to the Inn.
Day 3- Time with Nature
- Head out on Route 80 West to Columbia to visit the Lakota Wolf Preserve. You will enjoy a wonderful guided tour of the preserve, viewing several species of wolves and bobcats.
- Return to Route 80 West and cross over the Delaware River on the Delaware Water Gap Bridge. Turn North onto Route 209 for a trip to Bushkill Falls. Plan to spend the afternoon walking the trails and visiting the attractions. You may be able to attend a wildlife show to learn about local wildlife with the ‘stars of the show’ present in their cages.
- Return to the Inn to relax before dinner at Barone’s.
Day 4 A History Lesson
- Take route 80 East to Morristown. Tours of this historical city start at 10:00 AM.
- After your tour return to Washington’s Headquarters to see how the general of our Revolutionary War lived while in New Jersey.
- After Lunch at one of the many Morristown Restaurants drive to nearby Jockey Hollow State Park to walk the battlefield and see how the soldiers lived compared to General Washington
- A short trip forward in time will take you to the Stckley Museum at Craftsman Farms, a turn of the century log home. The log house, built in 1911, is one of the most significant landmarks of the American Arts and Crafts movement,. If time permits plan a visit to Fosterfields not a replica, Fosterfields is a working farm, using the tools, techniques, and materials of a turn-of-the-century farm.
- Return to the Inn to prepare for dinner at the Black Forest Restaurant.
Day 5 The Appalachian Trail
- After a hearty breakfast pick up your lunch filled back-pack. Select a snack and drinks from our hospitality center, grab your maps and hiking boots and become one of many who has been on the Appalachian Trail.
- Travel North on Route 206 for approx 25 minutes to the turn off for Sunrise Mountain. The northern Kittatinny Ridge rises in an uninterrupted rampart, climbing to 1803 feet at High Point, the greatest elevation above sea level in New Jersey. This rugged AT ridge walk is punctuated by craggy ledges, far-reaching vistas, plus the Normanook Fire Tower, Sunrise Mountain Pavilion, and High Point Monument, man-made features that ascend above the natural landscape.
- At the end of your hike return to the Inn for a well deserved rest on our veranda or in the garden.
Other ideas- Plan a day in Chester at Chester Streets Mall for shopping, then Main Street Chester for some unique shops including more antiques and craft shops. Stop at Taylor’s for a homemade ice cream treat. If you feel the need for more exercise stop in Hacklebarny State Park for a short (or long) hike).
Visit Well Sweep Herb farm for an informative morning or afternoon learning about herbs and how to use them. You may be able to find something you need in your home garden or you may arrive in time to participate in one of their classes. On your way back, stop at Four Sisters Winery for wine tasting and a tour.
