Spring in the Skylands:

A Romantic Victorian Getaway at the Whistling Swan Inn

Spring arrives quietly in the Skylands. One morning the trees are bare, and then — almost overnight — the hillsides blush pink and white, the garden fills with color, and the air carries that particular sweetness that only comes around once a year. If there's ever a time to escape to northern New Jersey, this is it.

You don't have to fly somewhere to feel like you've truly gotten away. The Whistling Swan Inn, a beautifully restored Victorian bed and breakfast tucked into the heart of Stanhope, NJ, is the perfect landing spot for a real staycation - the kind where you arrive carrying a little too much stress and leave wondering why you waited so long. Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a solo traveler in need of some quiet, or a group of friends ready to explore, the Skylands has something waiting for you just outside our front door.

Here's what a spring stay at the Swan looks like.

Arrive. Exhale. Settle In.

From the moment you pull up to 110 Main Street, something shifts. The inn's wraparound porch - dressed in wicker chairs and rocking chairs - has that effect on people. Come in, drop your bags, and let us take care of you.

Our nine guest rooms each have their own distinct character — no two are alike. From cozy and intimate to spacious and airy, each room reflects the Victorian personality of the inn with its own unique details, private bath, and the kind of quiet that's hard to find anywhere else. Some rooms feature spa tubs, perfect for soaking away the week before the weekend even really begins.Yogurt

In the morning, a hot homemade breakfast is waiting for you - the kind that actually sticks to your ribs and makes you think someone's grandmother snuck into the kitchen overnight. We'll send you out the door fed, happy, and ready for whatever the day holds.

Get Outside: Trails, Canal Paths & Wide Open Sky

Spring is peak season for getting outdoors in the Skylands, and the options right around the inn are genuinely spectacular.

Start close to home. The Morris Canal Greenway Trail entry is right off Plane Street here in Stanhope - practically our front yard - and it's one of the best-kept secrets in Sussex County. This easy, beautiful walk follows the path of the historic Morris Canal, a 102-mile engineering marvel that once carried coal and iron across New Jersey. You'll pass original stone sleeper blocks, old lock ruins, and historical markers telling the story of a canal that helped build a state. Keep your eyes on the water - on a warm spring day, you'll spot turtles lined up on the logs, soaking in the sun like they have absolutely nowhere to be. It's short, flat, endlessly interesting, and chances are you'll have the path nearly to yourself.

A little farther out, Allamuchy Mountain State Park offers over 36 miles of trails through hardwood forests, marshlands, and scenic overlooks. In spring, mountain laurel blooms along the rocky slopes and the Musconetcong River runs full and cold - some of the best trout fishing in New Jersey.

The Sussex Branch Trail is another favorite - 20 miles of converted rail trail through farmland, forest, and over historic bridges. Ask us about borrowing one of our complimentary guest bikes (available based on availability) and let us pack you a picnic lunch before you head out. There's nothing better than pedaling through the Skylands countryside with lunch in your basket and nowhere you have to be.

For the serious adventurers, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is about 30 minutes away - waterfalls, ridge trails, river views, and full-day hikes that will earn every bite of that post-hike dinner.

Step Back in Time: Waterloo Village

Just minutes from the inn, Waterloo Village is one of the most unique and beloved historical destinations in the state. This beautifully preserved 19th-century canal town sits along the banks of the Morris Canal - the very same waterway whose path you can walk right here in Stanhope. Explore more than 20 historic buildings including a working gristmill, sawmill, blacksmith shop, general store, and restored canal-era homes. The adjacent Winakung at Waterloo recreates a Lenape village with guided tours and living history programming. Plan on at least a half day, visit the website for days and  hours of operation.

A Day on the Water: Lake Hopatcong

New Jersey's largest freshwater lake is just a short drive from the inn, and in spring it comes alive. Lake Hopatcong spans more than 2,500 acres across Morris and Sussex counties, and there is genuinely no shortage of things to do on and around it.

Rent a boat and spend the day cruising the coves, docking at waterfront restaurants for lunch. Board the Miss Lotta for a narrated scenic cruise or a sunset cocktail cruise. Kayak, paddleboard, fish for trout and perch, or simply find a spot on the shore at Hopatcong State Park and do absolutely nothing for a few hours. Families will love Castle Cove's 18-hole castle-themed mini golf and gemstone mining experience.

Waterfront dining at spots like Stone Water, The Windlass, and Alice's Restaurant at Nolan's Point means you can make a full day of the lake without ever getting back in the car for lunch.

Shop & Stroll: Chester Village & the Craft Shows

About 20 minutes from the inn, the historic village of Chester is the kind of place you wander into for an hour and leave three hours later. More than 80 boutique shops, galleries, farm markets, and eateries fill a beautifully preserved downtown that feels unchanged by time — in the best possible way.

And twice a year, Chester becomes the destination for craft lovers across the region. Mark these dates:

Spring Chester Craft Show: May 30–31, 2026  |  10am–5pm  |  134 Main Street

Fall Chester Craft Show: September 12–13, 2026  |  10am–5pm  |  134 Main Street

$6 admission, rain or shine. Over 175 juried artisans showcasing ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, wearable fiber, glass, painting, and artisanal foods. These weekends book up fast at the inn — plan ahead if you want to make a stay of it.

The Antique Lover's Secret: Andover

Just minutes away, the town of Andover is quietly one of the best antiquing spots in northern New Jersey. The Scranberry Coop on Route 206 is the crown jewel — a massive 10,000-square-foot yellow building housing over 170 independent dealers with constantly rotating inventory. Furniture, glassware, vinyl, vintage jewelry, coins, collectibles — give yourself two hours minimum. Dogs are welcome, and on the first Sunday of the month from April through November there's an outdoor flea market too.

Grey Barn Antiques offers a more curated complement to the Coop, with a carefully selected mix of pieces that make for a lovely afternoon of browsing. Leave room in the car.

Where to Eat: Our Honest Local Favorites

Bell's Mansion — Right here on Main Street, this beautifully restored 1800s mansion is one of the most beloved dining spots in the area. The garden patio and beer garden are gorgeous in spring. New American menu, great Sunday brunch, and a room full of antiques that feels like eating inside a history book. Reservations recommended.

Shakey Jake's Café — A true Stanhope original. Don't let the casual vibe fool you — the Ahi tuna tacos, garlic pepper wings, and Cuban sandwich have earned this place a devoted following. Cold beer, friendly staff, and the kind of energy that makes you want to linger.

The Black Forest Inn — Family-owned since 1977 and one of the last truly great German-Continental restaurants in the country. Sauerbraten, venison medallions, handmade spaetzle, and apple strudel that will ruin you for all other desserts. Make a reservation.

Ask us at check-in for our current picks — we eat out often and love making a good recommendation.

For the Days You Just Want to Be Taken Care Of

Not every day needs a trail map. JQ the Salon right here in Stanhope is a wonderful spot for a blowout, fresh color, or full beauty refresh — a lovely treat to build into a girls' weekend or pre-dinner splurge.

And here's our personal favorite offering: we work with a traveling licensed massage therapist who can come directly to the inn. A professional massage in the comfort of your own room — and then you simply roll into bed. Ask us when you book and we'll coordinate the details based on availability.

Come Home to the Porch

Here's the thing about a great day out — it's even better when you have the perfect place to end it. After your hike, your afternoon on the lake, or your stroll through the Chester Craft Show, come back to the Whistling Swan Inn and sink into one of our wicker chairs or rockers on the front porch. Let your shoes come off. Let the breeze do its thing.

Take a slow wander through the garden and let the seasonal flowers stop you in your tracks. If you're lucky, a Monarch butterfly or two will be drifting lazily from bloom to bloom on their migration — like they own the place. On select evenings, the soft sounds of live jazz drift through the garden, turning the evening into something that feels less like New Jersey and more like a dream you don't want to wake up from.

We keep fresh baked goods coming. We know every back road and hidden gem in the area. We genuinely love helping guests find the version of the Skylands that's right for them — whether that's a muddy morning hike or a lazy afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

The Whistling Swan Inn isn't just a place to sleep. It's the base camp for your best New Jersey spring.
